How to set up TikTok Messaging Ads

TikTok Messaging Ads is currently in Open Beta testing. Please reach out to your representative to get allow listed first before creating the campaigns

Campaign level

Step 1:

  • Log on to TikTok Ads Manager, go to campaign and click on "Create"

Step 2:

  • Choose "Lead generation" as your campaign objective

Step 3:

  • Split Test can be used for Targeting, Bidding & Optimization, Creative

  • Click "Continue"

Ad group level

Step 1:

  • Choose "Instant messaging apps" as your "Optimization location"

Step 2:

  • Only TikTok Placement is available

Step 3:

  • "Dayparting" feature is by default on. Please select the day/time when you can respond to messages to ensure better user experience

Step 4:

  • Optimization goal "Conversation" (recommended) or "Clicks"

  • Optimisation goal "Click"

    • Click optimisation is available for all Instant Messaging Apps and for clients who have not integrated with MMTs

  • Click "Next" to move on to Ad level

How to report results

On TikTok Ads Manager

You will be able to see "Cost per results (conversations)" in the reporting section to monitor the campaign performance

You can also go to "Custom columns" and choose Messaging Event

  • Select Conversations (Instant messaging app) to report on performance

Ad level

Step 1:

  • You can choose to use a TikTok identity to deliver Spark Ads but it is not mandatory

Step 2:

  • In "Text" section, please make it clear that users can click on the ad cta to send a message to advertiser

  • Ideally, please also include this "message us" CTA in the creative/video

Step 3:

If you select Conversation optimisation

  1. Destination: Instant Messaging Apps as default destination

  2. Select your app "Messenger" or "WhatsApp"

  • For WhatsApp: Add in your WhatsApp number (number used for WhatsApp API above)

  • For Messenger: Add in "Facebook Page ID"

You can find FB Page ID by

  1. Visit FB Page, then click About page's cover photo

  2. Click Page transparency to find Page ID.

You can check to see whether the settings are all good by clicking "Check if the ID opens properly" and scanning QR code to preview, depending on your phone's OS (iOS or Android OS - only for FB Messenger). Please note the QR code only works for the specific OS. Clients need to have Messenger installed on their phone where they'll be taken directly to a chat

  1. After scanning QR code with your phone, a window will appear. Click "Open" to confirm if it can be directed to the correct FB Messenger/ WA

  2. If it's successful, you will enter the FB Messenger chat (for FB) with "Get started" button or for WA. In the ad preview, you'll see that the default message is a tracking code. However, in the actual ad, this message will be shown: "TikTok ID: __. Hello! I came across your ad on TikTok and would like to find out more."

If you select Clicks optimisation

  • Choose Instant messaging URL as your destination. You can select the instant messaging apps or use or a customised URL

  • Allowed social media apps are:

    • Whatsapp

    • Messenger

    • LINE

    • Zalo
